Using an Electric Pet Fence Indoors

It sounds like an odd idea taking an electric pet fence indoors, but with slight modifications of the technology, you can protect areas of your home with minimal impact.  Unlike the outdoor variety, you won’t need to dig into your flooring to place the system as these units are usually self contained and about the size of your average Frisbee.

Keeping Rover off the Furniture
We all have places we don’t want our dogs to go.  Whether it is a nice chair, the sofa, or near the trash can, there is a way to ensure compliance even when you aren’t home.  After placing the transmitter near or on the object you want to keep safe, adjust the strength for a distance of 2 to 12 feet.  Once the dog enters the specified range, the receiver will administer a small, corrective shock that discourages your dog from approaching the protected area.

The advantage of this system is clear.  There is little set up and it works unattended.  If your dog persists in approaching the designated area, simply increase the boundaries until it becomes clear where they need to stop.  Over time, you will achieve compliance.

Scat Mat
Similar to the indoor pet fence, the scat mat works on the same principle.  When your animal tries to climb up on a couch, counter, or whatever area you determine “off limits,” they get a small shock.  The disadvantage of a scat mat versus an indoor electric pet fence is that the animal actually has to commit the act you are trying to prevent.  Correction doesn’t occur until the infraction has already taken place.   It is better to prevent it from happening to begin with.

Still, combining scat mats with the indoor electric pet fence can be doubly effective.  It will provide a secondary incentive to avoid those areas that previously seemed so appealing.

Adapting the Outdoor System
The outdoor systems can be adapted to more enclosed areas if needed.  You can use a typical outdoor system to protect areas such as a gazebo or beautiful enclosed deck by hanging the transmitting wire along the roof line.  This prevents your animal from approaching an area you wish to keep pet free, but doesn’t require digging in the yard.  This solution is also effective if you intend to install a regular electric pet fence outdoors, but already have a wood fence in place.

Effectiveness
A system is only as effective as the owner makes it.  You can just place a system, put a receiver on your dog’s collar, and let him figure it out.  But, you will get a much better response if you take the time to train your dog in regards to what you wish to achieve.  It also helps to clear away trash, pick up toys, or do whatever else is needed so as to make the home a happy welcoming place for your pup.  Your involvement is key in raising a well behaved, obedient dog.

If you want to use an electric pet fence indoors, take a look at all your options and pick the one that is most suitable for your needs.
